I've Discovered a Natural Treatment for Nephrotic Syndrome that REALLY Works!

*Make sure to read the comments section. There's been lots of conversation about the specific way I use garlic, rather than the general way I posted originally.*

**Please do NOT DISCONTINUE PREDNISONE once started. Doing so can cause great damage to your child!  Garlic is to be used as an alternative to prednisone at the beginning of a relapse to prevent the need for prednisone, not a replacement when prednisone is actually REALLY needed.**

My six year old son, Jack, has kidney disease. It's called Nephrotic Syndrome. A simple explanation: when his immune system is challenged by a bug, his kidneys begin to allow protein to exit the body through the urine. This damages the kidney and can lead to renal failure. When he begins to have sustained elevated protein counts, he needs a two and a half month course of prednisone.

We found out about his NS one month after his second birthday. I had noticed that his eyelids swelled slightly when he had a cold, but the doctors that he saw said it was nothing to worry about. One morning, after he'd had a little cough for about three days (no fever, no nothing else), I went to his room to wake him and found him swollen, terribly, from eyelids to toes. It was shocking! He was in no distress, so I arranged for a friend to come to watch the children and took him to the clinic.

Since he wasn't yet adopted, we had to go to the state Medi-cal-accepting clinic instead of Kaiser. The doctor who saw him did a fine job of examining him, consulting with other doctors and diagnosing his condition. Several hours after entering the clinic, he was admitted into the local hospital with consult with the big Childrens Hospital in the closest big city. Three days later, his condition was under control and he was able to go home. I had learned a lot in those three days!

For the next year, he relapsed and required Prednisone three to four times a year. Poor baby. That strong drug has so many terrible side effects! Blessedly, he is Prednisone respondant, so it worked and further kidney damage is avoided. I hated for him to be on it though.

I found little on the Internet as far as natural treatments. I did find that raw milk helps boost the immune system, so I searched out a local source and added it to his diet. We also had a year old son who was lactose intolerant. As an aside, he can drink the raw milk with absolutly NO trouble. I initially began the research on raw milk due to him. It just happened to benefit Jack as well.

I also read that sugar depresses the immume system, making it much easier to catch any viruses that are floating around. We cut back on sugar. Around the same time, I began making our bread from freshly ground grain, and cooking much more food from scratch. Jack would still get ill occasionally though, end up on Prednisone.

Here's the natural treatment that works, though, even with elevated protein counts: A small clove of garlic, eaten with honey or applesauce, chased with a saltine if he has trouble swallowing the last bits of garlic, brings the protein count down in just a few hours. Seriously. Even at a 3+, it works.

He may smell like garlic bread, but he has not needed medicine but one time in almost three years!! I begin "garlikin' him up" as soon as I notice an elevated count and usually give it every day for a week, or until his count stays down without the garlic. We do daily urine tests during this time. (Click this for a link to the testing strips we use. After a week, I stop the garlic and keep testing daily. If the numbers go above 1+, he takes a clove, under 1+ and he doesn't. If his count stays good for several days without garlic, I begin testing every other day. When it still remains low, I test him every three or four days.

I'm so thankful that the Lord created this wonderful bulb. It's so very useful, even to the point of 'curing' us of our ails!

ETA: I originally wrote this post 1-25-2008. Jack has remained well, despite ups and downs in his counts. We still use garlic. He takes it himself and takes it with a saltine cracker, yogurt or applesauce.

ETA: It's now March 2012.  This post still gets lots of hits, so I thought that I would update.  Jack still is variable in his protein counts, so he has not "outgrown" nephrotic syndrome as his doctors thought he might.  We still successfully use garlic when his counts rise and he has not needed Prednisone.  He is now 10 years old and growing well!  We have removed wheat from our diet, 100% for many of us, including Jack, and mostly for everyone else.  Jack's eczema, which he had as a baby, but recently returned, has responded well to the removal.  I have been moving toward Mark's Daily Apple's way of eating for six months or more. We all feel a lot better without wheat!

ETA: It's now December 31, 2012.  We've had the worst cough and headcold going through!  Jack's counts increased to 2+ one day, and he had a little swelling of an eyelid, but garlic came through again.  His counts are down, his cold is gone and he is healthy with no prednisone. Jack eats a little wheat now and then, but it does affect his eczema, so it's kept to special occasions.  Someone else questioned milk in his diet, and I do have to say, that also, is consumed much less frequently than it used to be.  Most of us don't drink milk.  I cook with it now and then and we use whole cream or half and half in some smoothies. Jack and Troubles have almond milk smoothies.  We do use a ton of butter and no one seems to have issue with it at this time.  I don't bother getting raw milk anymore. My son who is lactose intolerant began to react to even raw milk, so he drinks almond milk.  Jack doesn't care to drink anything but water, but will have almond milk if we have some homemade granola.

ETA: It's June 2014 now.  Jack had a bad relapse with some swelling of his face, arms and legs, and counts at 4+.  We had a change to our insurance, and were having a very hard time finding a pediatric nephrologist. Blessedly, I was able to find a nephrologist who only sees adults who was willing to see him.  Since he was in the middle of a relapse, and garlic wasn't seeming to be able to get it under control this time, I was getting nervous!  The doctor ordered bloodwork....more detailed bloodwork than any other doctor has ever ordered.  It came back as expected, showing a severe relapse, but no other issues.  Our new doctor (for he was willing to keep Jack on as a patient, after meeting him and seeing how mature he was) wanted to be patient with his system and see if he could beat this relapse on his own, without medication, and with the Lord's help and the garlic's, too.  With close monitoring, we were both delighted that after several weeks with elevated counts, sometimes quite high as I said, he finally came down to negative and stayed there!  His bloodwork after the relapse came back perfect. Praise the Lord with me!!

ETA: It's August 2015 now. Jack continues to have minor relapses, all controlled and eliminated with garlic. I now include GSE (grapefruit seed extract) when he (or anyone else in the family) is ill. These are drops that are stirred into water or orange juice.  GSE also comes in pill form.  This extract works like a natural antibiotic. Research it to see if it might be helpful for your family!

  1. Thank you for sharing your experience. I do hope your son Jack remains well.

I read your article with much interest. My son (9) suffers from NS and in fact nearly died last year due to complications. He is also a type 1 insulin dependent diabetic, thus prednisone has more side effects for him than it does for other children. He has frequent relapses, usually triggerd by a cold or sore throat. NS is a living curse for our family, but your article offers a ray of hope. I don't know who you are, nor how to contact you, but my email addresses are:
    roy.baker353@ntlworld.com and
    roy.baker@enfield.gov.uk

I would be so grateful if you would have the grace to contact me so that I can talk further about Garlic as a treatment for NS.

I can assure you my query is 100% genuine.

  2. I wish I had seen this years before. I have been diagnosed ever since I was 3yrs old. I relapsed now and then and grew the illness out. At 17yr I had a baby and 1year later (2010) I was food poisoned and sadly I relapsed. I was swoolen so much I felt dizzy and could hardly breathe. Ever since, I've been admitted every six months and the prednisolone give me pains in my bone. Thank so so much for sharing you natural home treatment. I do hope it works well for me. And you son will grow out his diseaseth

  3. Dear, your words take my breath when i read till its end. Two years ago, my 10-aged son starts his first nephrotic syndrom, and still relapse for another 2 times. I am considering homeopathy in India, then i notices your page.

I will start tomorrow, 1 clove of garlic, but fresh or boiled ? or steamed so that it is easily to chew and swallow. Thanh you

  4. Dear Anonymous, So glad that you found my post. I hope that garlic will help your son. It seems most effective in children that have not had years of medication. Have your son eat the garlic raw, not cooked in any way. Though cooking makes it softer, the heat destroys some of the enzymes that make it an effective cure. Please keep me up-to-date with how your son fares.

  5. Hi
It's interesting reading this as my daughter who turns 13 nxt week has had NS since she was 3. She has been steroid dependant since developing it asking side taking many other meds but still frequently relapses. shes had 2 relapses in 6 wks at mo and the new meds recently which worked so well, gave her her life back and she didn't have 2 take anything else bar this no pred 4 the 1st time ever :-) the pannel it has 2 go thru at hospital have declined her having it again (cost) which our docs are appealing against.
I will try this as we r going into a relapse now and see if it works thats if I can get her 2 eat garlic alone :-\

  9. My Sons NS: Thanks for your questions. Here are my responses:

    1. How to give garlic to the child? I chop the garlic up in small pieces and give it to my son in applesauce, yogurt, salsa, etc. However your child can get it down, is fine, chopped or whole. Listen to how their stomach feels afterward!

    2. When we start getting results from it? I see results in a matter of hours, but I'm sure every child responds differently.

    3. Will it work on dependent child? I have no idea. It works on MY son, that's all I know!! Unless someone is allergic to garlic, there isn't any bad side effects so try it and see!

    4. If we get result from it, for how long we have to give garlic to the child? I give the garlic until my sons urine protein count is at trace or negative. For him, it's usually just a few days.

Do let me know how your son reacts! I love hearing people's results, what ever they are. :)

  13. Sanjay, I will pray for your son. If he can't eat the raw garlic with the honey, try with other food. Maybe on toasted bread spread with butter, or mixed into hummus or in salsa with chips. You could try applesauce or other pureed fruit or vegetables. My son was little when diagnosed and didn't like the garlic, either. Who really can like that strong taste raw? I would give my son a little treat afterward when he was learning to eat the garlic. I also spoke to him about his condition and how the garlic made him well. I sympathized with him, of course, but required him to consume it. Lots of cuddles and words of encouragement helped!

MT stomach ? and before or after food ? and how much quantity ? also honey and other thing how much qty ? sorry for trubble... may God Bless You

  15. Of course, I am not a doctor, I am only giving my personal experience with my son. My son was Prednisone-respondant and never needed any of the harsher drugs that are commonly given for NS. He only swelled the time he was diagnosed. The important thing seems to be that the immune system is in the best working order possible. That's why removing sugar, wheat, milk, or any other food that the child is intolerant to is SO important. If Jack was still struggling, I would have an igG allergy test done to find out which foods cause reaction. If the immune system is battling constantly because of a food intolerance, it would make sense that it fails in keeping colds/flus/etc. from causing the kidneys to perform poorly. The time of day he takes the garlic doesn't matter, in my experience. If his counts are high, I would probably give it multiple times a day (up to 3, probably) until they come down or he complains the garlic is bothering his belly. It can cause nausea in large amounts. I always give garlic with a meal to prevent nausea. The amounts of food you take it with doesn't matter either. It will get digested along with the food and begin to boost the immune system. Please don't worry about asking for specifics. I love to share what has helped Jack and hope that many others are spared from years of harsh medication and worsening of their kidney function.

  16. I was nearly in tears when I found this & praising God! My son Judah, who is now 4 has been dealing with NS since he was 1 1/2. He is on 13ml's of prednisolne now & 6ml's of prograf 3x's a day. He has also developed cataracts in one of his eyes due to long term steroid use. This has tormented our family for years. He constantly relapses & lately the longest he is in remission is a couple of weeks. We plan to cut out the milk & sugar & start the garlic. Immediately at 8pm when we saw this we gave him a garlic clove with applesauce. I tested his urine after & he was at 3+. I plan to give him the garlic again in the morning & test him again. I will update with results.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh, I will pray for Judah!! Please do share tomorrow's results. If it doesn't drop right away, don't give up! I can't guarantee that it will work for him, but it can't hurt! I have been told by some parents that it works and others don't see a response. I wonder if it has to do with how long they have been on strong medicine and how damaged their kidneys already are when the diet changes are made. You will *all* see improvements in your health by making the dietary changes!

    1. I believe I may have already replied on another thread and I apologise if this is slightly repeated.

I've had NS for 13 years now with several relapses. However, I was OK from 2006-08.

I'm 45 now and NS isn't going away. I'm on a 5mg dose per day (1 tablet). I would love someone (like yourself) to supply me with the 'snow mountain garlic' tablets that another member suggested, however, it's very expensive to source from the UK.

Any suggestions as to how I can source the garlic would be extremely helpful. Would ordinary garlic clove be OK to use or does it have to be a special type of garlic?

I appreciate your time to respond.

      Thanks.

  31. First, I 'll say thank you for this post; my daughter was diagnosed MCD last July and put on pred. I immediately started looking for a natural alternative, found your site and started with the garlic. It worked right away, and while she did have to finish her cycle of pred, her nephrologist said she was the first he'd seen be able to come off the pred at all, in a long time. She's had 2 or 3 minor relapses, all treated exclusively with garlic since then. BUT, last month we moved from Calgary to San Antonio, she got a little sick, and here protein levels started to spike. For the last week, maybe week and a half she's been sitting at a one plus, we do the garlic everyday, and sometimes up to 3 times a day. She is still slightly coughing, like one or two little coughs a night, but I did notice in the other relapses that it seemed to not go fully down until she was better form whatever infection triggered it. Have you ever experienced this? Do you know if it's bad for them to sit at a one, and for how long? I haven't been able to get our new health care all sorted out yet, so that is why I'm resorting to asking you all these questions I know you don't really have personal answers for; but any thoughts ( and prayers) would be appreciated. Thank you,
    Olivia

  32. Olivia, thank you so much for sharing your daughter's story! I would allow Jack to be at a 1+ for up to five days without worrying about it, on the advice of our nephrologist. I find that he'll either go down to trace or negative in that time, or increase to 2+ and need to start garlic. I do like to give his immune system a bit of time to defeat the challenge without garlic's help, if possible.

As for your daughter's count staying slightly elevated during the garlic treatment: yes. Jack's counts go down, but stay elevated a bit until the cold is gone. Again, if it's 1+ and staying there for a few days, I'm good with that. It usually doesn't take five days for it to drop to T or -. If he is just STARTING to get sick, I treat more aggressively than when he's getting over it.

This month, Jack did his regular Friday test. He had no symptoms, no did anyone else in the family. He showed 4+! It was the highest since he got sick as a baby. He took 3 LARGE cloves that day. The next day's test was also 4+. Another three LARGE cloves brought it to 3+ the next day. It stayed there another day, then dropped to 2+ for two days, then finally went to negative and has stayed down. Whew! Life's never boring with children, is it? I'm so very thankful for the Lord's blessing, and so glad that our story has helped keep your daughter off of meds, too! Blessings to you. Feel free to ask any ore questions you may have!

  34. Hello Mommaofmany, it was so useful to read your sharing about your son, first I would like to place a sincere thanks for doing this so that many started sharing their experience. My nephew Regan was diagnosed with NS when he was 1 1/2 years, he is four years now. He is taking 20 mg of steroid everyday however there was no significance improvement. He always used have puffiness which was making him look sick always, last week he was diagnosed for cat carat we all were shattered however our mighty God did not leave us down, it was then I found your postings and the sharing from many others. He constantly used to relapses and his puffiness was never down, we started giving him garlic in his food 3 times along with his food a drastic change his puffiness was completely down after so many months, though his protein level is still 4+ we trust surely this miracle will work for him. My sincere thanks and prayers for your child and family. May the Lord be a shield of cover over your family. Thank you, will keep updated on his progress, we find his motion is very watery, so skipping for one meal, any experience of yours.
    Regards

  38. Maddiha, thank you for sharing! I would personally be very comfortable give garlic along with prednisolone, but make sure to ask your doctor. my Son Aarav has been diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome just a week back. One fine day he woke up all swollen with all symptoms of nephrosis. His protein levels were 3 + and he has been put on pred by his nephro. We had given pred for a day and his swelling came down and found your article. Bless you for this.

wish to know that can I give pred and continue with garlic at the same time and if can share some tricks to give garlic to a 2 year old - as per your previous suggestion plan to give it finely chopped mixed with honey

  40. Thank you so much for for your wonderful article! My son was diagnosed with NS 3 years ago when he was 8. He was on steroids for 1 year off and on and it was hard on him. Then they put him on stronger meds for 18 months. He went 4 months after he came off of those before he relapsed a couple of months ago and was put back on steroids. during that time I had read your article. As soon as he finished his steroids he relapsed again. I have been giving him 3 garlic cloves a day, along with a good diet, lots of water, and essential oils that support the kidneys, along with prayer and fasting. He has gone from +3 down to a trace and his swelling has gone away! I know I was led to your blog because I had been praying so hard for a way to help him naturally because the meds are so hard on his little body. Thank you SO much for sharing your experience so that others can benefit. I am hopeful that this will continue to help him in the future and he will be able to be free of medications. Thanks again

  42. Hello Mommaofmany
How are you and your son? My daughter she is now 3 years old. She was diagnosed NS in june 2013. She had gone with 2 and half months of treatment at that time. After one month only she had relapse and again her treatment started with the prednisone. She finished her treatment in oct 2013 and again she relapse in Dec. I saw your blog and started giving her garlic from past 10 days. It is really very helpful. But after giving her garlic also the protein count is 1+ it is not negative. Just to check weather garlic is affecting her or not I left her one day without garlic and next day her count was 2+ and I saw puffiness in her eyes also. Today again I give her garlic and the protein count is 1+. I just want to know how long it takes to be negative. Sorry for bothering you but I am really curious about it because I don't want my daughter to go through the prednisone treatment once again. We all are really thankful to you for sharing your experience.
Waiting for your response. Thanks divya

    1. Hello, Divya! Thank you for sharing your daughter's experience. I see results from the garlic within hours, usually, and certainly within days. The nice thing about garlic is there is no danger is using it for as long as you need to to see the results. I would continue giving the garlic to her once or twice a day. Please let me know how long it takes to bring her to negative!

    2. Hello
My daughter protein count is fluctuating between 2+ and 3+ from past 4 days instead of giving garlic daily. Here in Germany the size of garlic clove is very big so I cut it and give and next time I give the remaining part.just want to know is it right way of giving garlic?? Waiting for your response. Divya

    3. I would cut a fresh clove daily, and use the remaining one in food. The active enzymes will be oxidized overnight by exposure to air. Also, keep the diet very low in all sugar, even fruit, and consider bone broths for her to drink. She will have high counts until her immune system defeats whatever it is that is challenging it. My son's last relapse was two weeks before he was at negative again. Our nephrologist was very pleased that garlic worked, even when the numbers were high (even 4+ for a couple of days!). My son's bloodwork was closely watched, but garlic finally did it, without prednisone!

    1. Please do NOT DISCONTINUE PREDNISONE without finishing off the entire course. That can cause major damage to your child! Give garlic by all means, but if you have started a course of pred, finish it, tapering properly!

  44. Hi Momma of Many,

Thank you so much for sharing the experience with us. I have started giving garlic with honey to my son this morning after reading your post. However, my son is having very serious edema on his body, with swelling eyelids, big tummy and back. Therefore, I would like to get some advises from all the mothers here.

Can I give him diuretics and penicillin?

  45. I would give garlic, of course, but make an urgent appointment with a specialist. Please don't fail to be seen, waiting for the garlic to work. If he's so swollen he needs to be seen quickly.

  46. Hi MommaofMany,

Thankyou for sharing your experience on using garlic as a natural treatment for Nephrotic Syndrome.

My son is now 5 yrs old.He was diagnosed with NS just before his 3rd bday.He relapses frequently and was on and off predinisolone for 2 yrs..We just taped off a course in December and he started showing 1+ protein in his urine in January.I started giving him garlic 3 cloves daily. The size of a garlic clove is comparatively small in India. But still his counts started increasing to 2+ and then close to 3+.I still continued the garlic and the counts slowly started coming down to 1+,trace and now it is staying -ve for the past couple of days..

Once again thank you soooo much for posting this .Hoping my son wont need Pred again.. Hope all the kids suffering from this disease would outgrow it very soon...

I used to give him garlic with honey usually 2-3 small cloves 3 times a day and it always worked. This time he has no infection but his protein count is showing 1+ since past 20 days. I give him 4 very small cloves 3 to 4 times a day but doesn't seem to work. The counts are not increasing but it's not going down either. PLEASE PLEASE PRAY FOR MY SON! LET THE GARLIC DO THE MIRACLE! 50. Hi there, my daughter was diagnosed with NS in 2010 December. She had relapsed 3/4 times from dec 2010 to april 2011, they finally did a biopsy and started her on ciclosporin and slowly reduced the prednisolone dose and stopped it. She was on ciclosporin for almost 2 yrs and she was taken off it last year April2013. Unfortunately she relapsed again in Dec 2013. Shes been back on Pred since then, had 4 relapses since then when ever she was taken off it. Now, shes relapsed again even though shes on Pred. The docs have now increased her dose from 70mg to 80 mg daily until she protien goes down to trace or negative..It's been a real roller coaster ride for us all, especially for my daughter, physically and mentally. Your article is very interesting and I will start giving her a bit of garlic every day. Nothing is better than natural remedy.

  51. Hello everyone!
I have discovered that snow garlic works better than regular garlic. It is a single pod garlic and can boost our immune system 50 times more than the regular garlic.

Snow Mountain Garlic has proved its health benefits as a wellness therapy primarily, for enhancing the immune system plus restoring of health for common cold, high blood pressure , rheumatism , tuberculosis, cholesterol, cardiovascular/ respiratory problems and cancer.

Normal garlic is difficult to be eaten in the raw state easily. It is acidic . Snow Mountain Garlic is palatable and easily consumed and does not harm your stomach or intestines.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Where would one find this garlic?

    ReplyDelete
  53. This garlic is easily available in India as it grows in the Himalayas. However, I found these 2 sellers in India with whom you can place the order online and they will have it shipped to the US. Please click the link below:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0061J8D9E/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&condition=all

But, the rates published are much higher than what it costs in India. In India, 250 grams of snow garlic costs around USD 5 only.

If you would be interested, I could buy it for you and then figure out a way of sending it across to you.

You have saved my Son's life and I could do anything for you as a token of appreciation.

  54. I will have to try the snow garlic as my son couldn't stomach garlic. We have had success though with "Clove" by Doterra Essential Oils....just adding one drop of it to 4 ounces of water have helped us to get protein levels down in a relapse.

    1. Interesting! I am just learning about essential oils, so that's fascinating that it worked for you.

    2. Hi Jonathan, I've been reading about using the oils topically on my 9 year old son for NS. Lemongrass diluted with fractionated coconut oil (or any carrier oil) and I use Basil topically for adrenal support. I tried the DDR Prime after my son finished a taper of prednisone and he stayed relapse free for 10 months. Unfortunately he relapsed again and now when I use the DDR prime it causes his urine test to go up. I'm shelving it for now and trying your suggestion of clove in water. Since clove is one of the ingredients in DDR Prime I'm praying it works.

    3. One more thing Johnathan, I give my son one drop of Clove in a shot glass with a drip of Wild Orange. Do you do this once a day? twice a day? Thanks for your input.

    4. I have an update:
The garlic proved too strong for my son to take. I ordered the Snow Mountain Garlic but it has yet to ship via Amazon. I started giving my son one drop do terra's Clove and one drop Wild Orange in a syringe with orange flavored fish oil (1 tsp) about 3/4 tsp of probiotic, and top it off with orange flavored Vit C. We did this for three weeks and he went from a +2 to negative. Doug is still on Tacrolimus 2.5 ml 2x a day but when he relapses he gets the Tac and Prednisone. I'm overjoyed at the results!

  56. Mommaofmany, and everyone,
Our youngest son was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome on May 27th(this year). He has been on prednisone since the 28th. His numbers are up and down and all over the place, but never lower than 1+. Since it has been almost a month, and he is no where near remission,/trace or negative counts, they have scheduled him to come in and probably schedule a biopsy, and start the heavier/meaner drugs.(at least one of those;maybe both).
I have been alarmed and concerned, and just plain have no faith to give those other drugs to my child.(he's 6).
I cried out for a miracle...and for help.- and today I found your article/post.. I know it's God leading, and guiding us to help. Thank you,...thank you, thank you! For posting this. And to everyone who has shared their story and results! Thank you!
I was 3/4ths of the way through the comments when I went ahead and gave him his first dose of garlic.( I took a dose, too-with him). He doesn't like garlic. Never has.
I put the garlic in some yogurt, and put the garlic yogurt on bread.( a piece about an inch wide and in inch and a half long) and folded it.
I said, "I'm not going to lie, this will probably be gross, but, you don't really have to chew it. You only have to get it down."
He gagged, but eventually got it down. Then promptly announced he " would never do that again!". lol~
It was kind of ...gangly. Lol~

So, I told him I would do my best to get it on it goes down without him having to chew.
    Any ideas?

Anymore results from people who children weren't responding to the prednisone?

I'm thinking the dietary changes are key. YHWH led us to the same dietary changes three days ago( when we got the call about the Dr feeling its time for a change in treatment plans). I also know it takes time for those to work. Time I don't have. ( I have until this Wednesday or Friday(appt. Day)

Thank you this article/post. I have hope now, and my faith is working again.

My son was 5 when his was diagnosed with NS. He's now 9. When I would have to give my son prednisone it was torture. It tasted horrible but he eventually got used to it. Honestly I pray that my son (who does put up a fight with new foods) will understand that it's better to eat raw garlic at home than be hospitalized with IV's in his hands.

  58. Hello MommaofMany,

My name is Jatin and I have been diagnosed with NS in July ('13). I am getting constant relapses even after following the track of prednisone and cyclophosphamide. I have got a relapse recently and have almost lost my hope from medication and while googling for a miracle, I miraculously came across your site and found this amazing article. I instantly had a clove of garlic with vegetables (carrot and cucumber) while reading your article. Hope it does the same magic with me.

Although the doctors say the reason for relapse is unidentified yet, I have found dairy, sore throat and cold infections among the top reason for my relapses.

I will totally stop diary consumption including tea and slowly reduce wheat consumption too.

I will keep you updated with the amount of leaky protein after I get it tested in a week.

Hope your son and everyone suffering from NS dont need any more steroids in their life as only the sufferers and their family knows the underlying pain that comes along.

Thanks a ton to you and GOD for this.

    1. Hi, Sanjay! I posted an update and a new picture of Jack. If Rishi has started steroids, then he must finish off the entire course! You can give garlic at the same time. My best advice is to keep his immune system as strong as possible so he avoids colds and other illnesses! By avoiding illness, the relapse doesn't start! I will be praying that he is well quickly!

  61. Hello, I have a friend who's son is the same age as mine (10 yrs) and when she illuminated gluten and dairy from her son's diet and added magnesium citrate (100 mg 2x a day) he did much better. HOWEVER adding magnesium can greatly effect current medications. If your child is on Tacrolimus the magnesium will intensify the Tac therefore your child will need less. The only way to monitor this is bloodwork. Diet is everything with NS. Low protein, low sodium and lots of fruits and veggies and again no dairy and gluten. Stick with chicken and fish and stay away from pork and beef which are harder on the kidneys.

  64. Hi all, I'm a mother of 2 from Malaysia. I have been following the post since Apr 2013 when my son first got NS. He relapsed again in Nov 2014, I gave him garlics to control on situation however, when he got cough and sneeze it went worst and admitted hospital again. After that, my dad found a well experienced doctor who works on Western cut Chinese herbs prescription. We met him immediately after my son discharged from hospital, and found out there he had cured many kids with NS all these years. He advised to allow my son to finish the course of steroid first before starting his prescription. He guaranteed that NS can be cured with maximum 9 months consumption of the given prescription. We had no choice but just to try. My son has been taking the description twice a day, morning and night happily (it tastes like herb) as it looks like chocolate. We went back for check up every 2 months and the situation was stable, and we do really take care of him whenever he feels not well. So far, the urine remain ar neutral all the time.
6 months later, my son went back for check up and the doctor said he is well already, but his kidney is still weak so that my son take for 3 more times. The total period is 9 months, my son ended the consumption of this Chinese description in Nov 2014. He has been doing well and stay healthy. (touch wood) there is no relapse so far. I have been observing his situation for many months in order to ensure that it really works before I share with all of you.

The description is not expensive at all, around USD1+ for 1 day consumption. There are some food that can't take during this period such as fruits, cold beverage etc.

If anyone is keen, I could share the doctor's contact with you so that you can contact him directly. Please email me at yywong.ashley@gmail.com or you may WhatsApp me at +60126566561 for quicker reply.

    Hope it helps.

  67. I want to give you a big thank you!! My daughter who just turned 4 was dianoised with nephrotic syndrome this past March. She has been off and on prednisone. Back in September the doctor recommended we put her on cytoxan. As soon as I did some research about it I knew that cytoxan was not the route we wanted to go. After hours and hours of researching natural treatments I found your article. Am I so glad I did. We started with garlic during a round of prednisone. Once she was weaned off prednisone she was doing really good till she ran a fever for 2 days. Her pee immediately jump to a 4+ on the pee strip. We upped her amount of garlic and within a week and a half her pee was back to trace. I am just sooo grateful for you sharing your findings about garlic. It truly is huge for my little girl not to have to go back on prednisone.

    1. Update: I was very hopeful about garlic however I couldn't get my son to consistently take it. My son has had NS since the age of 5 and now and 10 years old we are finally on a path of healing but as strict as his diet was (gluten free dairy free), supplements and using homeopathy for colds, viral infections, headaches, stomachaches, etc. he still would relapse 2-3x a year and always go back on prednisone. The "ah-ha" moment was when a fellow mom of a NS child took her son to an acupuncturist and started seeing much better results and healing. I followed suit and it's made all the difference in the world. He sees the acupuncturist once a week since Nov 2015. However due to bad diet choices my son just had another relapse and instead of putting him back on prednisone he would see the acupuncturist 2x a week. He went from a +3 to negative in 10 days and during this time he stuck to a vegan gluten free diet. My son NEVER has gone back to negative without the help of prednisone. I'm overjoyed at the results!!

I must stress that if you live in the US not all acupuncturists are the same. Training is very different for doctors and physical therapists. They only have 1 year of training in acupuncture where as a certified acupuncturist has 4-5 years of training. Pick your provider carefully and most do take insurance or offer special pricing.

  71. Hi mommyofmany and all others,

My 5 yr old daughter got NS when we were in India in October 2014 .. With on and off steroids she was given a course of cytosine and she was doing just fine. As the steroids levels reach low like 4 mg she relapsed and again went to 32 mg of methyl prednisone . In the last 3 months she has relapsed three times . Now the doctor has decided to put her on one more immunosuppressant to get her off steroids. She keeps on getting cold and replapse at the same time. First she gets cold and then relapse . The cold won't go away . I do not know why is this happening.

I am starting the garlic remedy today.. Pleas advise if any one has similar experience ...

  72. Hi Juhi, in addition to the garlic please start homeopathy medicines for the recurring cough and cold. The homeopathy will improve her immunity and thus reduce the number of relapses.

Also, the snow garlic which is easily available in India increases the immunity by 50% naturally. so please try the snow garlic....

  74. Yes Juhi. you can try 1/2 tsp of turmeric mixed with 1 tsp of honey for the cough and cold as a home remedy. Have this the last thing at night with no water after that. Chawanprash also helps build immunity and reduce the recurrent coughs and colds.

But in case of NS you need to give garlic as suggested by mommy of many in addition to the other home remedies to get the protein level down immediately.

  75. I have read this blog with significant interest as someone who has had Protein +2 for quite a long time. I would like to try this technique with garlic. A question, a number of you report results over matter of days, and watching changes over number of days. How are you measuring +3, +2, +1 , minimal etc. over days? Surely, you cannot be taking 24 hour samples every day? Is there another technique to check this? I normally get mine checked every 3 months with 24 hour collection test only

My son was diagnose with NS when he was 18 months, it lasted about 1 1/2 years and stayed away for 10 years....We moved to a town where the water was polluted and after about 9 months of drinking this water I received a letter in the mail notifying me to drink at our own risk but beware of "long term kidney failure or cancer"- we stopped drinking the water or using the water immediately. Shortly after that he has his first relapse and for the last year and a half we've been battling it out. I will definitely try the garlic with my son because as of now he is 4+, with sky high blood pressure-on medication and a swollen tummy.

Garlic is useful for preventing a full relapse in many people, but not all. I'm thankful that we DO have steroids to use if/when needed! I expect my son to live a full, active, healthy life.

  83. How many times do we swallow the garlic a day?

    1. It really depends. When my son is spilling, he takes it 3 times a day. If he's just feeling unwell, once or twice a day. Some people take one clove a day, every day, sick or not. The garlic is chopped and swallowed, but chewing is also a (hot, spicy, hard-to-do) option.

  84. Hi, Just wanted to praise God first and foremost for the miracle He has done for Jack. I started to do this for my 5 yr old son, who was diagnosed in fall of 2015. The garlic, along with multi-vitamins and nettle, turmeric, dandelion and ginger tea have been working for 2 weeks, but things are now going worse not better, he is at +3 on his dipstick and >800 on his 24 hr urine. We are continually praying and believe Jesus can cure him. Do you have any suggestion?

    1. If the garlic doesn't bring his protein level down, get him on medication.

    1. He still has relapses and garlic still brings him back to health. His nutrition is a lot like other kids his age, though he takes care with his salt intake.

    1. Take advice from your doctor on that. He/she will be best suited to decide.

  90. Hi Mommaofmany. Does a childs age make a difference in the dose if garlic? My son is almost 2 and I'm just thinking if 3 cloves a day is not too much for his small body. But on the other hand I'm also worried that if I give him to little dose then it will do nothing for him.
He is off pred for only a week now and already starting a relapse. 2+ today.

    1. I would start with smaller amounts with someone so young, yes. Perhaps a half a clove 2-3 times a day. I can be irritating to the stomach.

  91. Hello MommaofMany,
I've commented over the years and its been quite a ride having a son with NS. Little recap: he was diagnosed at age 5 and just turned 13. He had the WORST hospital stay 9/2017 that lasted for a week. Got prednisone via IV for 3 days straight and his veins kept collapsing which meant he got a new IV twice a day and with all the edema the nurses had a horrible time finding a good vein. On the third night my son looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, "Mom, why doesn't God hear my prayers?" It was like a dagger to my heart. The next morning his nephrologist told us about a new drug they are using for steroid resistant kids called Rituximab. He got one dose in the hospital and another dose six weeks later. He hasn't relapsed since. He's doing so well that he's now tapering off Tacrolimus and CellCept. My prayer is he takes care of his body. These are all strong immune suppressants and diabetes and lymphoma are still a concern.

    1. Thank you for the update. I'm sorry he's discouraged, but remind him of James 1:2-4. The suffering we endure will be but for a moment and brings about good!

  92. My son was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome last year in april when he was 6 yrs without any edema. He is now going to be 7 next month. We have noticed froth in his urine and with the help of tests it was confirmed. We then started with prednisolone as pe doctors advised and completed course and with in the three days of course his protein was nil. It was 4 and half month course. After the course he got many cold, cough and high grated fever but protein in urine was always negative. We r from India and recently shifted to Australia 3 months back and this time he was having very mild cold and low grade fever 5 days back and noticed froth in his urine and he was spilling proteins in his urine 3+. As per Doctors advised we have to start the course again of relapse for shorter period but I am very afraid. I tried papaya leaf extract in honey for 2 days and the proteins are 2 plus now. We are following homeopathic medicine from India as well which helped him in cold and earlier. Plz guide what should I do. How much garlic should I give him. CAN I give it in honey or in any other form.

Any help is appreciated as I am out breath and too much worried. This is the first relapse after 7 month off from the medicine.

    Regards

    Samriti

    1. You can give him as much garlic as his tummy can handle. It varies person to person. Give it to him any way he can get it down!

  93. Hi Mommaofmany, thank you so much for this post. My son is on 0.3 for many weeks now, occasionally he goes down to Trace (never negative) and sometimes 1+ but is usually at 0.3. His labs don't look good (protein in urine is 0.3g/l and high cholesterol). In such a scenario what would you do - would you start Prednisone? I'm not seeking a medical opinion as I know I should check with my Neph just wanted your personal opinion/experience. Thanks a lot!

    1. You'd have to see what your doctor advises. Personally, I wouldn't pursue a course of Pred for my son in this situation.

  94. Hi Mommaoofmany,

My son was diagnosed with NS in April 2017. After treating initial episode with prednisolone, my son was in remission till 15th April 2018.

After a brief episode of low grade fever his urine protein elevated to 3+.

We started garlicking him and he came down to negative within a week. Stayed negative for another week.

Now his protein levels have started to increase again to 2+. No signs of flu or any cold. We have started giving him garlic from last 3 days but protein levels are 2+.

What should we do?? As this time garlic is not working?

    1. I'd just keep steady, cutting out all sugar, including breads and fruits, and giving garlic. Also I would increase other immune boosters and virus fighters, like grapefruit seed extract and kombucha. How is he doing now?
